wow... reading gets me excited!! i'm always reading.. here are my favs:
The princess- lori wick
the hawk and the jewel- lori wick
promise me tomorrow- lori wick
all american girl- meg cabot
mediator series- meg cabot
all of Laurlene mcdaniels books
and a whole lot more...
i read a lot of lori wick's books because she's a christian writer and i want to minor in religious studies and reading her books is a fun way for me compare islam and christianity. it a lot easier to understand than the bible. it gives me an insight without putting me to sleep and i gotta say i learned a lot by comparing her notes in the book with islam. i actually learned a lot more about islam through this experience. i learned what they have in common and where they are completely different. i'd recommend this process to anyone taking religious studies...
and i recommend laurlene mcdaniels books to anyone who likes sad stories. her books remind me to be greatful and thankful because they are all about someone dying or suffering from a disease like cancer and cystic fibrosis and all her characters are young.
like i said.. reading gets me excited....

Minhaj Al-Muslim is a VERY good book.
I read my first Lurlene McDaniel book in like 4th grade... it does make you grateful for what you have, but only if you're mature enough to understand that. It wasn't my book, it was my sister's and her class was reading it together. A Lurlene McDaniel book for 2nd graders?! You've got to be kidding me.
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn- Betty Smith
Charlotte's Web- E.B. White (First chapter book I ever read!)
Patience and Gratitude- Ibn Qayyim, translated by Nasiruddin al-Khattab (Thanks Swazaay :))
(On a side note, I was reading The Silmarillion by Tolkien and I couldn't imagine what he was thinking writing that as a sequel to The Hobbit!!! It's not boring, but it's not interesting if you've never read [or seen] LOTR. Has anyone else ever read it?

I also like Shel Silverstein's "children's" poetry :o
It's simple, I like that about it. Sometimes I like wordiness, sometimes I just like reading simple poems and smiling about them later on. :)
I loved The Missing Piece Meets the Big O, you can read it online here (http://teary.com/book/index.shtml).
Two poems I love:
The Voice (from Falling Up)
There is a voice inside of you
that whispers all day long,
"I feel that this is right for me,
I know that this is wrong."
No teacher, preacher, parent, friend
or wise man can decide
what's right for you - just listen to
the voice that speaks inside.
Woulda-Coulda-Shouldas (from Falling Up)
All the Woulda-Coulda-Shouldas
layin' in the sun,
talkin' bout the things
they woulda-coulda-shoulda done...
But those Woulda-Coulda-Shouldas
all ran away and hid
from one little Did.

interesting... I wanna read that now...tell me more :D
lol swazaay, hope i dont disappoint you when i say its not a horror book ;)
The book is basically about morality and conciousness.
It goes into how an average student can convince himself to do a horrific crime and make (what he thinks are) ligitimate excuses to do so and then its consequences, both psychological and physical.
When i first read the book i thought "wht the? This is the most stupid and weirdest book i've ever read" but you gotta give it time to seap through after reading it. Its pretty deep.
Rida, i liked the last poem you posted :D
i read on of those Dr. Seuss books and it was so much fun.

Reliance of the Traveller-
translated by Nuh Ha Mim Keller, from Ahmad ibn Naqib al-Misri's Umdat al-Salik

Return of the Pharaoh: Memoir in Nasir's Prison by Zainab Al Ghazali
This book is one of the best books I've ever read in my life. Zainab Al Ghazali's strength and trust in Allah in times of hardship was truly amazing. She is a real life role model for us all. We live in a non-Muslim society and are free to work for Allah's cause, but she lived in a Muslim country and was tortured for simply professing her faith. May Allah (SWT) grant us patience like she had throughout the trials in our lives.
Unfortunately I lent this book to someone and never got it back... I hope they benefit from it as much as I did InshaAllah.

Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky
I finished reading this awhile back...didn't get a chance to post about it
it's an interesting read! But I couldn't help thinking if only they had picked up the fingerprints they would've had their man easily...rendering the book to b half it's length ;)
but yeah, it was written in the 1860's when fingerprints weren't even widespread- so can't really blame Dostoevsky :p

yeah it would have been much easier if the crime was done today. He would have been hauled in right away and he wouldn't have had to go through all that mental torture.
but you know... that police guy already knew that he was the one.. even without the fingerprints.. he just wanted to see how far this guy would take it until it breaks him inside
...and it was also the respect factor.. he wanted to give the guy the chance to turn himself in.. instead of the humiliation he would have to bear by getting arrested.
-- i'm using pronouns cuz i cant remember their names.. i hope it wasn't confusing for you to understand.
neways, i really felt sorry for him at the end :sorry:

Anyone who liked "The Phantom of the Opera" movie, definitely read the book, much better, my friends thought it was boring but I liked it waaaaaaaay more than the movie.
Michael Crichton is good for all you sci-fi readers out there, very addictive. Steven King is also a very addictive writer, no classics or anything, but still good books.

i think its just the beginning..and sometimes its really boring and he takes like a whole chapter to prove one tiny point...but this is only because Great Expectations was written in the newspaper..so its was like a chapter every newspaper..anyway he was paid by the word so he would write a lot..but ok the point i was trying to prove was that its boring at some times but at others it's really good and suspenseful..try to give it another shot, you may find that you like it.

Does anybody know of some books that are really good if u want to read about the history of Islam and teh like??
Please share, Jazakallahu khairun.
Do you mean in terms of the Prophet Muhammad's life or after his death? In terms of history of Islam Umber had recommended another book on another thread-- A Short History of Islam by Sayyid Fayyaz Mahmud. Might want to check that out.
Reading Rainbow was the COOLEST right up there with Wishbone.
This made me laugh for like 10 minutes. Seriously, I'm still cracking up. I never thought anyone watched Wishbone. It's like Power Rangers and Barney-- no one admits to watching them but anyone could tell you tons about each show.
Anyway, I liked Reading Rainbow. But I think I liked wrestling better when I was at that age.
The Outsiders- S.E. Hinton
Sarky! I missed you man! And I never read this book even though it's one of those books like The Giver that everyone in the world is supposed to have read. I think I'll go borrow it from the library tomorrow.
-The hobbit (luvelee)
One of the best books I ever read. I was reading it (again) last week and I realized that I can read it over and over again and never get bored. Same with LOTR, I'm at the end of The Fellowship of the Ring (don't ask why I read books over again) and I had so much trouble putting it down. I think I could talk about these books forever :o-- especially The Hobbit 'cause it's my fave from the works I've read by Tolkien.

Yeah, I meant in terms of history. Cuz I just finished reading teh Sealed Nectar recently, and that was about the Prophet Muhammad's (saw) life. It was great, no doubt.

lol. I'm happy I made you laugh, you know deep down everyone loved Wishbone.
I'm sorry but The Lord of the Rings trilogy is very boring and difficult to read. I liked the Hobbit, but I started the trilogy. And I could not get into it at all. Let's talk about the fungus on the rock for five pages, because it really makes a difference. It was one of those books I wanted to like so bad, but I just couldn't and I hate forcing myself to read a book that I don't want to read. Maybe it's just me and I just can't understand the masterpieceness of Tolkien.

I'd definitely welcome recommendations, especially the Forgotten Realms Books (cause you said they're better than LOTR). :) I actually wasn't into fantasy at all, and I'm still not sure if I am, but my brother's friend gave him the boxed set for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and I got bored one day and started reading them. And they were awesome. :D
I know what you mean Muslima19, there are parts where I think, "Oh dear God, please no more descriptions." But the thing I like about Tolkien is that even though he has a lot of detail he doesn't leave holes in the plot. Like sometimes I'll be reading a book and I'll find that there's basically a whole time frame where I have no idea what happened. That makes me crazy. But in LOTR you know important things when they're happening or find them out soon enough. Like there's one scene, I think it's in The Two Towers, where Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli are looking for Merry and Pippin after they were carried away by the Orcs and Uruk-hai. So they have no idea where they've gone or if they're even alive, and neither do we, but then in the next chapter he goes back and explains exactly what happened to them. I think that's cool, even if he takes 15 minutes to describe Treebeard's eyes. :)

I simply love anything by Oscar Wilde, P.G Wodehouse, Ernest Hemingway, and John Grisham. I like romance but not contemporary ones. I have only two favorite romantic books:
A Farewell To Arms by Ernest Hemingway
Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen
Everytime I read these two books I bawl my eyes out.
I LOVE comedy which is why I'm addicted to Oscar Wilde and P.G Wodehouse. British comedy is my favorite :D Apart from that I like:
American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis
Less Than Zero by Bret Easton Ellis
In Memorian by Tennyson (It's a poem and a very long one but it makes me cry everytime I read it)
Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens
Rule of Four by Ian Caldwell
The Mistress of Spices by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni
The Stones of Venice by John Ruskin
That's it so far. I'll add more as I keep remembering them or read new ones.

but you know... that police guy already knew that he was the one..
neways, i really felt sorry for him at the end :sorry:

that police guy was sooooo annoying...I actually wanted Raskolnikov to get away with the murder... lol, I dunno why, guess I felt bad for him too...
Bottom line- I recommend thisssss book! It's awesome! :D

I've read Crime and Punishment but for some reason it didn't appeal to me. I wonder why...usually I like classic pieces.

I think one day in the future, I will give LOTR another go because I think it deserves it and I really want to like them. I love the plot, the premise, and the themes in general, maybe when I try again, it will rub me in the right way.

the police guy was smart..
Raskolnikov was stupid to be soo obvious. If i commit a crime, i wouldn't go back to the scene of the crime and talk about murdering people
... but thats the point of the book.. we think we are capable of big and bad things, but when the time comes our concience doesn't allow it.
Beenish, i didn't like the book right away either (i think i said that before) and i also prefer classic books... it takes a while to take in books like these. They are not direct but more philosophical.

i gave up reading that.. it was soo descriptive, it was annoying!

I know, I thought he would b slick about it afterwards, but guess not... and his first stupid mistake- he ended up stealing sum other useless stuff from the lady, instead of all the money she had stashed away! man I could go on...but we might b giving the plot away to future readers... ;)

oh man, I CANNOT read books that are too descriptive...I'll read upto like the second page, and if it's explaining to the last bit of detail the greenery of grass or something, that's where it ends for me... :o

I think my reason for dislike might've been that I had to read C&P for my Eng 12 AP class. AP classes sometimes really take the fun out of reading. I've realized that I enjoy reading books more in college as an English major mostly because they actually want you to enjoy the book and love it for the marvelous piece of literature it is.
I love literature from the Victorian Times because as a Muslim I think I identify with the faith issues they were facing back then. I think the Muslims are going through their Victorian phase at the moment. In Memorian by Tennyson is a wonderful read. The points Tennyson makes in it, even though they were in the 1800s, they seem so contemporary.

Everyone’s reading are so extensive, I feel rather ashamed of my own short list. However, like most of you, there’s nothing more exciting than books!
The top of my list got to be anything from Harun Yahya!
I especially like the ones about cosmology (the creation of the universe) from the light of Al-Quran and supported by scientific proofs.
Check out www.harunyahya.com
Many people mentioned classics here, for those who might want to check out a L.M Montgomery or Jane Austen or L.M Alcott etc etc , feel free to visit www.abacci.com, a site where you can download free e-books! Sure, it’s much better if you can hold the books in your hand, but in case they are hard to get, you can still read them. One of my particular favoirite was Eight Cousin by L.M Alcott(who wrote Little Women) and its sequel, The Rose in Bloom. And apart from Anne of Green Gables series (by L.M Montgomery) I also like Blue Castle by the same author.
And oh yeah, I love Garth Nix too, especially his Abhorsen series (also known as the Old Kingdom series) :
1.Sabriel
2.Lirael
3.Abhorsen
Just drop by at www.garthnix.co.uk!
The BFG, Revolting Rhymes and The Giraffe The Pelly and Me are among my favoirites of Roald Dahl. His stories are so crazy, and the words he made up were simply hilarious!
Visit www.roalddahl.com You’ll love this site!
And since nobody else mentioned it, I must add books by Diana Wynne Jones are simply cool too, she mostly wrote for young adults. My ultimate favoirite of hers include Howl’s Moving Castle, Hexwood and The Power of Three…and oh yeah, the Crestomanci’s series of course.
If you like unexpected endings (but a happy one, don’t worry), try them out!

I understand why some people might find it rather hard to ‘digest’ LOTR. Believe me, I wouldn’t have tried the books either, if I haven’t seen the movies first. I only read them when there’s absolutely nothing else to read. And I found that they weren’t so bad, thought like some of you said, the descriptions were rather tiring…
And so, those are mine. And thanks everybody, for mentioning you guys favoirites. Books are rather expensive here(especially for students with slim purses like me!) and I especially appreciate if somebody can recommend me a good book, so that I won’t waste my money on something that might turn out to be a failure.
Lord of the Flies- William Golding
A Man for All Seasons- Robert Bolt
Julius Caesar- Shakespeare
oh myy! ridaa i agree with the hp books. but all of the above.. eek:eek:

OK, so I can see why Lord of the Flies and A Man for All Seasons may not be to your liking, but how can you not love Shakespeare?!!? He's the man!
No, but seriously, I fell in love with Julius Caesar when I played Mark Antony in our school play. It was a lot of fun-- we wore white bedsheets as togas over our jilbabs, lol. Antony has the coolest lines in the whole play, in my opinion. I read my part a million times over to get it just right, and I was just in awe at the words. Shakespeare's brilliant, we go way back. :)

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
I just finished reading 'An Introduction to the Sciences of the Qur'aan' by Abu Ammar Yasir Qadhi.
MashaAllah it is a very well-written and (although it says an 'introduction') detailed book! Highly recommended! My favorite chapters were about the Wahy (concept of inspiration and the procedure through which the Qur'aan was inspired) and the Gradual Revelation.
Sh. Yasir ends the book w/ this (something we all need to ponder upon):
"The Prophet :saws: also said, 'Whoever puts (the Qur'aan) ahead of him, it will lead him to Paradise; and whoever throws it behind him, it will drag him into Hell.' Which of these two categories do you wish to be in?"

I preordered about 4 months ago, lol. I'll get it at midnight as I'm going to that midnight release party with friends at Borders.
When I finish (in about 2 days time or less :D) I can totally fill you in to how it was...

Yep, I pre-ordered on Amazon.com since my parents think going to a store at midnight is crazy so the book will be at my doorstep Saturday morning, inshallah. Some people have already recieved copys because the distributors shipped them out accidentally. I wish I was one of those people...

LOL, yeah I thought my parents wouldn't let me but its summer and for some reason, they're letting me.
I didn't want to pay for shipping so I decided not to preorder online.
AWW. I wish I was one of those people also.
Illegal copies are being sold on Ebay and other places, as I've heard.

I messed up Book 5 for myself because we were in Canada and I couldn't buy it yet because we were staying with someone and all that, so I was reading the news and the Times had an article on it, and the first line revealed that Sirius dies in the book. But I was still completely shocked because I wasn't expecting him to die the way he did, so it all worked out in the end.
I ordered Book 7 to Strand Books because I like it better than Barnes and Noble. :) So I'm going to go pick it up Saturday morning InshaAllah, and I'm just going to stay away from the world from Friday evening until then so it's not ruined for me.
By the way, the book was leaked online a few days ago... it's available for download on torrent sites but I'm refusing to look at it or all the spoilers people keep posting. Some companies shipped it early even though they weren't supposed to...
